ARSENAL’S TRIUMPH AGAINST THE ODDS: David Stewart’s 89 Breaks Record For Most Successful Documentary Due To Fan Demand
The release of 89 in cinemas has broken a number of records to become the most successful documentary ever on OurScreen.com with more than 3 times the number of screenings confirmed than the previous record holder.
Cinema screenings of 89 are available to book through the Our Screen platform, which enables fans to request their own screenings at cinemas across the country and if enough tickets are sold the screening is confirmed.
With over 90 screenings created across the country and thousands of tickets sold, football fans are embracing the opportunity to watch this acclaimed film on the big screen. With nearly 30% of screenings being organised outside of London it has been a great opportunity for fans to come together outside of the traditional Arsenal heartland of North London – with a screening even taking place in Liverpool, the team they played against in the momentous 89 final game of the season.
The film is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD and digital platforms, with multiple screenings sold out through into December as fans look to enjoy one of one of the most pivotal and dramatic moments in football on the big screen.
Executive Producer Lee Dixon comments “I’ve been blown away by the response to 89 on the big screen. Watching it with an audience is an experience I’ll never forget.”
David Kapur, Director at OurScreen.com added "As a lifelong Liverpool fan I was dismayed to be supporting the release of something that amounts to little more than sacrilege. On a colder, more professional level though, it's been fantastic watching the success on the platform that will pave the way for more documentary film releases to use us as a means of connecting with their audience through an unrivalled big screen experience.”
About the film
Anfield 1989. For the first time in a century the final game of the season pitted the top two teams against each other for an intense sporting duel watched by millions. The league title was the prize and the entire season hinged on how the very last seconds played out. Arsenal were unfancied and unfashionable compared to the mighty Liverpool. The odds were stacked against them.
With unprecedented access to the protagonists Lee Dixon, George Graham, Tony Adams and Michael Thomas and contributions from avid fans Dermot O’Leary, Nick Hornby and Alan Davies – 89 is a nostalgic, emotional tribute to one of the most compelling football finales of all time.
Directed by Dave Stewart (The Humans Face, Origins of Us) and executive produced by former Arsenal right-back Lee Dixon and football correspondent Amy Lawrence, 89 is a universal tale of a band of brothers whose camaraderie has lasted long after the trophy was lifted.
Set against the culture, style and music background of the 1980s, 89 mixes archive and unseen footage from games at the time. Packed with revealing interviews, insights and memories from the original squad, game officials, fans and the people there that night, it’s the definitive account of a watershed moment in football and a must-watch for any sports fan.
