"Not what I expected, a completely enjoyable surprise"

I have to be honest, when I went into Snitch I knew virtually nothing about it, I'd seen production stills etc. and I thought I'd be seeing a high octane thrill ride with a cast headed up by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, instead we are treated to a well crafted look at the American Criminal Justice System that boils down to the question; how far would you go to save your son?

Based on true events, the premise of Snitch is simple enough; a construction boss (Johnson) goes undercover to get his son freed from prison after being set up in a drugs deal by an apparent friend he is seen Skyping with.

The rouse is so believable that before too long Johnson's John Matthews is appointed as the money runner for the cartel, which culminates into a terrific high speed chase.

Ric Roman Waugh should be commended for bringing this tale to the big screen; not only has he assembled a brilliant cast - Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper and Benjamin Bratt, but he has utilised them wonderfully without making the film over the top,  allowing the film to speak for itself to get its point across with its character driven narrative.

Johnson proves that he isn't just brawn, playing out the vulnerability of Matthews as a father just trying to help his son,  Sarandon plays the no nonsense DA Joanne Keeghan effortlessly, every move she makes is to strengthen her campaign for office, while Pepper is almost unrecognisable as the DEA Agent Cooper, with a gruff demeanour and fantastic beard.

Jon Bernthal's Daniel James is one to watch as the struggling ex con torn between helping Johnson's John Matthews and keeping his family out of harms way. Similarly the supporting cast play their parts well, and you really empathise with Jason Collins who is played with heart by Rafi Gavron.

Melina Kanakaredes plays Sylvie Collins, Jason's mother and is completely believable as the grief stricken mother who has no idea what to do, all she can do is support her son.

Snitch keeps you engaged from start to finish, and at no point did I feel bored by proceedings, thankfully at no point could I predict what was coming next, as much as I tried, I just sat back and enjoyed the ride.
