Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Is Number One Distributor In UK & Ireland In 2018 And Triumphs At Box Office With Biggest Year Ever

04 January 2019

2018 has become Disney’s biggest year ever at the UK & Irish box office with a staggering £313m setting a new industry benchmark for a single studio with three films alone amassing over £50m each at the box office in a single calendar year.

The accolade has never before been achieved by any studio. Three of the top four titles released in the year were from Disney with 23% of the overall market share being Disney owned. The studio released just 12 films in the year and once again retained the biggest film of the year title with Avengers: Infinity War taking the GBO 2018 title. Disney has now been crowned Number one distributor for three consecutive years in the UK & Ireland and with its slate in 2019 looking strong hopes to build on this achievement even further.

UK and Ireland Managing Director of WDSMP Lee Jury said, “2018 was an astonishing year for Disney and we are delighted to have set a new record for our Studio and the Industry in surpassing the UK & Irish box office record set by ourselves in 2016, a year that included such hits as Rogue One A Star Wars Story, The Jungle Book and Finding Dory.

We want to say a huge thank you to UK and Irish Cinema-goers for showing such passion, loyalty and support of each of our Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, and Lucas Film releases once again. We are humbled by the results in 2018 and applaud the fans of our movies across the UK & Ireland whose support is simply extraordinary. Huge congratulations to our studios team here in the UK and Ireland and of course to the remarkable creativity from the cast and film-makers for the simply incredible slate of films they have brought to our cinema screens this past year.”

2018 three films over £50m: Avengers: Infinity War £70.8m, Incredibles 2 £56.2m and Black Panther £50.5m.

2016 titles box office: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story £66m, The Jungle Book £46m, Finding Dory £43m.
