This Week on Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend: Comedian Greg Proops Opens Up About His Wild, Gambling-Addicted Father

Comedian and podcaster Greg Proops (Whose Line Is It Anyway? The Smartest Man In The World) gives a rare insight into his tumultuous childhood and "out of control" father on this week’s Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend.

"I never talk about my family," says Proops. “The only time I've ever talked about my family, really, is on this show."

Sitting down with Alison Rosen on the eve of the publication of his first book, The Smartest Book in the World, Proops went on, "It was just constant mayhem. He couldn't be controlled… He was giant and had a lot of anger issues… 6'3", 250, bellicose."

He also talks about his father's obsession with horse racing, saying, "He wanted to watch horses race around a track and bet on them. Every minute that he could do that was the overriding concern of his life."

Proops says his father started hitting him up for gambling money when he was a kid. "You have to understand how gamblers' minds work. They don't think, 'You're but a child.' They think, I know you've got $150 and I need that $150 because I've got an exacta in the seventh race that I gotta backwheel. 'Cause I got a horse that cannot fucking fail.'"

Other topics skewered by Proops' trademark wit are racist talk show hosts, being a male feminist, his loathing of the Oxford comma and whether or not opposites attract.
