THAT’S NOT A KNIFE… THIS IS A KNIFE! The Fan Carpet’s Annabel Spinks-Jones shares her VIKINGS Forge Day Experience

07 August 2017

To celebrate the release of VIKINGS: Season 4 - Volume 2 on Home Entertainment today, The Fan Carpet sent our very own Annabel Spinks-Jones on a special Forge Day, where she forged like a Viking, many thanks to Premier PR, 20th Century Fox and MGM for the badass day!

It’s not every day that one is asked to forge a blade. I couldn’t help but feel a little bit like Hatori Hanzo, or perhaps it was the legends of King Arthur my steel would contribute to. But when I found out it was a Viking blade I was to forge, I felt imbued with a special kind of cool; a variety of badass that only Vikings have.

A very non-Viking squeal was let out in excitement at the prospect of getting to play Blacksmith for the day, an event in celebration of the latest Vikings Blu-ray release. As we arrive, we were greeted at the gate by a man who is exactly what you’d expect a Blacksmith to be - tall, broad-shouldered, hammer-wielding - Owen Bush of Bushfire Forge; he is exactly the calming, gentle giant you’d want to be taught by. He talks us through the safety and we all look very earnest as we realise that the forge is basically the hottest thing we’ll ever come across.

We are assured of the historical provenance of the design, and scenes of Sussex slaughter are evoked as I contemplate what cheese-board to assign my future knife to.

Blacksmithing, we find, is surprisingly calming; you are chained to the heat of the forge, forced to wait for steel to heat and work only while it glows orange. There is a meditative quality to the hammering and waiting, checking and correcting. There’s a calming rhythm to the sounds and a pride in the craft takes hold. As my blade edges towards completion (pun intended), the gentleman at the next forge is considerably further ahead. He is a plucky chap, being filmed for a bonus feature on the forthcoming Blu-ray release. Not only is he consistently a stage ahead, but he’s also occasionally stopping and talking to camera. He’s obviously hitting a lot harder than I am.

A little feminist cheerleader inside me sulks and I nod in defeat as our mentor offers the use of his power-hammer. That isn’t a nickname for his arm, it’s a mammoth of a tool that I am sadly not allowed to use myself. I am reassured that I am hitting well and would have been able to finish it myself with more time. What really reassures me though, is that the woman from Twentieth Century Fox at the opposite anvil has declined the power-hammer and is hitting steel like a true Viking warrior. Valhalla awaits for this one.

As the days comes to a close, we count the empty water bottles at our feet, and lovingly sharpen our edges. Our creations are wrapped and I’m reminded of the city life we are returning to. I wonder if that city life has anything to do with how popular stories of old have become.
