A 15-year-old budding songwriter from Sevenoaks in Kent, Olly Carter, has beaten stiff competition to be shortlisted for the inaugural BIC® Write and Shine prize, with judges saying his lyrics “demonstrates a good pop sensibility”.

BIC® has teamed up with singer/songwriter 4Music TV host and YouTuber Bethan Leadley, The Big Feastival, and platinum-selling producer Andy Whitmore at London’s Greystoke Recording Studios, to give the winner a chance to get a “foot in the door” of the music industry.

A team of expert judges lead by Danny Cope, Curriculum Leader: Popular Music and Songwriting at Leeds College of Music, chose the top four from hundreds of entries for the Write and Shine competition, which encouraged budding songwriters aged 13 to 24.

Bethan Leadley, who releases her new single entitled ALL OF YOU today said to The Fan Carpet's Marc Jason Ali "Everybody that we picked as the finalists were all very, very different, which we really liked, they were the four best, but it also happened to be that they were all very different, which was really exciting for us. There’s a lot of good talent there."

Speaking about the finalists individually, Bethan added "Cara, I really liked the fact that she gave these Amy Winehouse jazz vibes, which I was really into. And you could tell she had a lot of soul there, and it’s not something you can really replicate; you either have it or you don’t, so that was really, really cool to see.

Lily, was a really, really talented player generally, her song was very, very sweet, she already has the complete package, she’s already really confident and her song was really well structured.

Olly, I loved his song, it was really really cute; and threw back to my own youth about having crushes, that was really, really sweet.

Violet just had so much attitude! And you could tell that she had so much confidence, so much character, the song just took me completely off guard and it was different to anything else I had heard in the competition."

A public vote on The My BIC Pen Facebook page will now determine who takes out the big prize of recording their song in a studio and performing on the mainstage of The Big Feastival in front of a crowd of thousands, alongside Bethan, Olly Murs and Louisa Johnson.

BIC® will capture the whole experience in a short film, which will be released along with the winning song on Bethan’s and BIC®’s social channels, reaching hundreds of thousands of people.

Anyone voting for any of the finalists on the My BIC Pen Facebook page from Friday 4 to Friday 18 August 2017, will also be in the running to win tickets to The Big Feastival, which runs 25-27 August on Alex James’s farm in the Cotswolds.

BIC® is partnering with The Big Feastival on the festival’s ‘Common Room’ area for teenagers, where there will be songwriting workshops with established and up and coming artists, a lyrics wall and plenty of 4 COLOURS™Shine pens so people can let their creativity shine, plus lots of other fun activities.
