Chewbacca Visit Creates A Magical Moment For Patients At London Hospital at MediCinema Screening of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY
EVERYONE’S FAVOURITE WOOKIEE GIVES SURPRISE INTRODUCTION TO SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY
The Galaxy’s favourite Wookiee, Chewbacca, has made a surprise appearance at the CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL to meet and greet patients ahead of a special screening of the UK’s number one movie, SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY in the CW+ MediCinema, a charity-run cinema in the hospital.
Chewbacca’s visit gave some of the hospital’s patients and their families a truly out of this world moment. It forms part of Disney’s social purpose programme, which works in partnership with others to help build emotional resilience. Kat Mason, MediCinema’s CEO, said “It was an incredible moment for patients to get to meet Chewbacca and to see SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY in its first week of release. Some patients are in hospital for months at a time, so we cannot thank Disney enough for making this screening so special for them.”
“Disney are proud to partner with MediCinema UK as part of our wider social purpose programme. By working with the charity and hospitals, such as CW+ and Chelsea and Westminster, we can create Moments that Matter for patients and those closest to them when they need it the most; helping to build emotional resilience through positive shared social experiences.” said Sara Hanson, Director - Charitable Programmes at Disney, EMEA.

MediCinema is a charity dedicated to improving the wellbeing of patients, their families and carers across the UK through the magic of the shared cinema experience. Founded in 1999 at St Thomas’s Hospital, we build, install and manage state-of-the-art cinemas, screening the latest releases the film industry has to offer in hospitals and health facilities. We do this so that long-term patients can enjoy some precious normality and the escapism, magic and excitement that a trip to the cinema brings to each and every one of us.
Our seven MediCinemas are located in health facilities around the UK and delivered 27,300 cinema experiences to patients and their families in 2017. MediCinema also provide separate nursing care to ensure patients, whatever their condition, have the best and safest experience while in the cinema.
Our purpose built screens show up to date film releases, donated by the film industry for free, and are fully digitalised with RealD 3D screens and Dolby Surround Sound. Our screens are built to accommodate patients in wheelchairs, beds, on drips or monitors so everyone can enjoy the joy and escapism of cinema. By creating a true cinema experience in this safe, stimulating, relaxing and sociable environment, MediCinema-goers can escape the isolation of their wards and illness, and enjoy a few hours of normality and fun with their family and loved ones.
The CW+ MediCinema in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Chelsea, is our newest MediCinema. It is run in partnership with CW+, the charity for Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and every week it offers an adult screening, a children’s screening, a screening for teenagers and a screening for older patients as part of CW+’s Care of Older People programme and additional special screenings for patients who are unable to attend the regular screenings, such as those at risk of infection or in palliative care. It seats 40, has room for six wheelchairs and five beds. Last year, we screened 186 films and gave 3,776 cinema experiences.
