Bee-dee-bee – Pop Culture Icons Attend The Casinos: The Cast of Popular Sit-Com MARTIN Reunite, Igniting Reboot Rumours

28 February 2018

Martin was a sitcom starring Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell that aired for five seasons on Fox, from 1992 to 1997. During its run, Martin was one of the network’s highest-rated TV shows. The show was based on Lawrence’s character, Martin Payne, who is selfish and witty, but deep down, loves his friends and family. Martin’s girlfriend-turned-wife Gina Waters-Payne was played by Campbell, and she acts as the peacemaker on the show who thinks Martin can do no wrong. Martin is set in Detroit and is about a man who sometimes doesn’t do the right thing as he is working his way up, with his girlfriend and friends always by his side.

Martin Was a Household Favourite

Fans loved the TV show because it was so relatable. People could relate to the show’s characters in a way unlike before. On the show, Martin has a close relationship with his two best friends, Tommy and Cole. Tommy was played by actor Thomas Mikal Ford, who passed away in 2016, and Cole is portrayed by Carl Anthony Payne II. Tommy is the intelligent friend who serves as the voice of reason, and Cole is the dimwitted friend who means well but doesn’t have his head on straight. The last of the main characters is Gina’s best friend, Pamela James, who is portrayed by Tichina Arnold. Martin and Pam have an antagonistic relationship, always insulting one another, but deep down, they care for one another as friends. It was these main characters that made Martin a household favourite in which fans knew all the words to every single episode ever created.

Martin was one of the most popular TV shows in the 90s.

All Good Things Must Come to an End

In 1997, Campbell filed a lawsuit against Lawrence, claiming that she was verbally and physically assaulted, as well as sexually harassed. For this reason, she did not appear in most of the last season’s episodes, and when she did appear on set, producers made sure that Campbell and Lawrence didn’t cross paths. The showed explained Gina’s absenteeism by saying she was away on business. The issues between Lawrence and Campbell is what caused the show to not renew for a sixth season.

What’s the cast been up to all these years?

Since the show ended in the late 90s, what has the cast been up to all these years? Well, Lawrence has made several movies, including Blue Streak and Big Momma’s House. In fact, Big Momma’s House did so well that they made two sequels. Lawrence also continued with stand-up comedy, which was his first love, and has been on tour numerous times throughout the years. Lawrence has taken it back to his roots by touring different casinos around the U.S, doing comedy shows.

Many casinos want the top celebrities to show up to keep the players entertained. It’s a long tradition which started with legendary music shows in Vegas, where Frank Sinatra and Elvis played long into the night. But in modern times, the entertainment culture evolved, and now people like Martin Lawrence are keeping audiences in thrall with their hilarious comedy shows. In addition to this, he’s been busy keeping up with his three daughters, and recently got engaged.

Over the years, Tisha Campbell portrayed Jay Kyle on the family sitcom My Wife and Kids, which aired from 2001 to 2005. In addition, Campbell has always been interested in music and has contributed vocals for a few different soundtracks over the years. Campbell has also been busy as a wife and mother to her two children.

Before his passing, Thomas Mikal Ford had appeared in several different TV shows after Martin, from New York Undercover to The Parkers. He also appeared in a Kid ‘n Play movie, Class Act. Ford was also an author and wrote two inspirational children’s books. He spent a lot of his time traveling to different schools looking to empower and inspire young kids. In 2016, Ford passed away from a ruptured aneurysm in an Atlanta hospital.

Throughout the years, Carl Anthony Payne II has appeared in several different TV shows since his role on Martin. Payne had a recurring role in Rock Me Baby for 22 episodes and George Lopez for three episodes and has made appearances on Girlfriends and The Game. Payne has kept a low profile throughout the years. It was rumored that Payne and Lawrence had issues with one another before the show ended, which continued up until recently.

Tichina Arnold has been in numerous movies and TV shows since Martin ended. She’s best known for her recurring role as Rochelle in the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, which aired from 2005 to 2009. In 2013, Arnold and her sister created the We Win Foundation, a foundation helping those people suffering from Lupus.

Reunited and It Feels So Good

The cast of Martin reunited in 2016 when they all attended Ford’s funeral, except for Lawrence. The cast came together to pay tribute to Ford’s life and posted a photo that immediately went viral on social media.

In February 2018, Lawrence, Campbell and Arnold were all seen leaving Morton’s Steakhouse in Burbank, California, immediately sparking rumours that a reboot is in the works. This reunion between the three is the first in years, as Campbell and Lawrence haven’t spoken to one another since the late 90s. Lawrence and the ladies played it coy at first until a video of the trio went viral. Afterwards, Lawrence’s fiancé took to Instagram with a photo that stated that the show was indeed coming back!

Everyone is Here for the Reboot

Fans immediately went crazy after Lawrence’s fiancé, Roberta Moradfar, posted her comment. Lawrence commented on her post with emoji eyes, as if he was confirming that Martin is scheduled to make a comeback! Fans on social media have been excited and speculating as to how the show will pick back up after all these years, how they will incorporate Ford’s death and how the chemistry between Campbell and Lawrence will be after all these years!

It is 2018, and the show ended well over 20 years ago, which leaves fans excited but also wondering how the show will stand the test of times. Although fans would love to see a reboot, they are wondering if it is possible for the show to remain as good years later or is it better left alone? I guess we will find out!
