05 March 2018

As a devout fan of comics, you love nothing more than browsing in comic book stores for hours searching for the issues you need to complete your collection. You have been to a number of Comic-Con events in your signature Aqua Man costume and you love reading, organising, archiving and enjoying your collection. The only thing that would make your love of comic books more perfect is if you could master drawing some of your fave styles and characters.

Fortunately, you don't have to be an art major to learn the art of comic book style drawing. You need the desire, some key supplies, and some tools and resources to help you get started. For instance, check out the following tips:

Start with Some Basic Supplies

Most budding comic book artists, in their enthusiasm for getting into their new hobby, will overbuy on paper and other supplies. As Creative Comic Art notes, when starting out, it is best to buy a drawing pad with a hard cardboard backing so you will have good support if you sketch while standing.

You will also need some pencils and/or markers. If you visit a local art store, test out the different types of pencils before buying them; this will prevent you from choosing pencils with lead that is too hard or too soft and that you will never use. If you have the budget, spring for a number of markers in different sizes, colors and widths; this way you can cover large areas with color or do fine drawing.

Download a Drawing App and Harness the Power of Your Phone

If you are tech savvy, download the How to Draw free drawing app from the Apple store. The app will teach you basics such as learning to draw faces and cartoon characters, show you how to draw the human body, teach pencil drawing techniques and how to sketch stick figures in action.

If you have one of the latest smartphones like the iPhone X, you will definitely enjoy using the app on the iPhone X's large and crystal clear 5.8 inch super retina HD display. If you have a stylus pen that is compatible with the iPhone X, you can use it with the app. Thanks to the iPhone X's durable glass you don't have to worry about scratching the surface while learning to draw comic book characters.

Look for Local Meetups

Another great way to learn comic book style drawing is to watch for local meetups that include workshops, drawing practice sessions and seminars. As a bonus, you will meet other comic book fans who are also trying to hone their skills as an artist. For example, the Los Angeles Figure Drawing group is a private group that schedules meetups in the LA area. You can apply to join the group and then attend as many days and different venues as you wish.

Try Googling "(your town) comic book drawing meetups" or something similar. You might also check the schedules of community centres to see if they have comic book drawing workshops coming up.

Try Online Tutorials

Another great way to learn how to draw comic book characters is to watch online tutorials. Skill Share offers one free month of unlimited access to literally thousands of classes. You can check out videos on how to draw faces, cartooning 101, faces and expressions and much more. If you find that online tutorials are a good fit for you, consider becoming a member of the site for $15 a month.

Developing your new interest in comic book style drawing will not take a great deal of money or long classes. By investing in some basic supplies and a free app, using your smartphone to watch online tutorials and trying to find like-minded people, you will be able to adeptly draw your fave characters in no time.
