Gillies was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to a pediatrician father. He was raised in New Zealand and went to Southwell School and the Hamilton Boys’ High School. He starred in his acting debut in the New Zealand drama Street Legal, where he played Tim O’Connor (2000-2002). He has been featured in the blockbuster movie Spider-Man 2 alongside Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire.
