SYNOPSIS

Beyond the high jinx and the cross dressing, the classic comedy, Tootsie, is at its core a story of the lengths a man will go to survive. Michael Dorsey, played by Dustin Hoffman in one of the finest performances of his distinguished career, is a respected actor with a difficult reputation who is turning forty and the roles are disappearing. After receiving the news from his agent that no one will hire him, Michael does what anyone else in his position would do: he goes into crisis mode. He has to pay his bills after all! After doing some serious thinking way outside of the box, Michael decides to audition for a soap opera—as a woman named Dorothy Michaels. Michael gets the job and Dorothy becomes a sensation all over the country. Michael ends up falling for one of his co-stars Julie, played by Jessica Lange, but Julie knows Michael only as Dorothy and thinks of Dorothy as one of her girlfriends. Complicating the situation even more, Julie’s father, played by Charles Durning, falls in love with Dorothy. Eventually Dorothy’s true identity as Michael is revealed and hilarity actually does ensue.
