SYNOPSIS

Beauty and the Beast is Cocteau’s most perfect film because it speaks to so wide an audience with its intensity of vision and the emotions it inspires in us. The importance of Cocteau’s work on film is that it embodies a number of different traditions and disciplines and is as beholden to classical drama as it is to the avant-garde. That is why it remains so fascinating and so strange in people’s memories. “The movie screen” said Cocteau “is the true mirror reflecting the flesh and blood of my dreams.” He was almost sixty when he made Beauty and the Beast, his first full-length feature. But the astonishing fact is that this elderly poet had, and still has, a huge influence on the avant-garde of American film. A true masterpiece.
