SYNOPSIS
Superb melodrama of Victorian London, based on a play by the rediscovered Patrick Hamilton, in which Anton Walbrook plots to drive his wife insane when she threatens to stumble on his guilty secret of murder and theft. This is the original version by Thorold Dickinson – most prints of which were destroyed when MGM releases its glossy remake with Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotton in 1944.
