Viggo Mortensen ready for Eastern Promises sequel
The ‘Lord of the Rings’ star received an Oscar nomination for his performance as a Russian gangster in the 2007 thriller. And he’s reported to be reprising the role – with director David Cronenberg and screenwriter Steve Knight also returning, reports Deadline Hollywood.
So, David Cronenberg will direct from Steve Knight’s script, and the Focus Features project hopes to go this winter. But first, let us remind you that those guys have to work together on the Sigmund Freud movie The Talking Cure…
We’re sure you already liked the idea of bringing a sequel of the 2007 mafia drama to the big screen.
“We are going to have a meeting very soon between me, Steve Knight and Paul Webster to discuss what the script would be. I have some very strong ideas about what I would like to see, but I would like to hear what they have to say as well. And then after that, if all goes well, Steve goes away and writes a great script. If we all like it, we make it.”
But it’s not so hard to guess sequel will be focused on Viggo Mortensen’s Russian-born gangster character named Nikolai Luzhin as in the end of the original film, it is unraveled that Nikolai is actually working for a British intelligence service.
So, he will definetely be the center of the story, but we still don’t have any idea whether other major characters (like one played by Naomi Watts and Vincent Cassel) will also have parts in the upcoming movie.
It’s actually interesting that Cronenberg never had desire to make a sequel before, and looks like this is the first time he’s ever been in a situation where he actually want’s to do a sequel of a movie.
As we heard, some people out there believe this is one of the best gangster movies, so no wonder the most of the audience trust this Cronenberg-Mortensen team, and is ready to see new adventures in Eastern Promises 2!
