WIENER-DOG, Todd Solondz’s critically acclaimed comedy, is now available on DVD and Digital from Picturehouse Entertainment.

In this deliciously melancholy and offbeat indie comedy, iconic director Todd Solondz resurrects Dawn Wiener, the awkward lead from his 1995 breakout hit Welcome To The Dollhouse, to deliver one of his funniest films to date. Here played beautifully by Greta Gerwig, Dawn appears in just one of four interlinked stories of American life that connect an affluent suburban family, a frustrated screenwriting teacher, an elderly depressive and Dawn herself. A bracingly funny, often moving film, Wiener-Dog sees Solondz tackle typically bold and tricky themes with caustic wit and shrewd observation – and better yet, he does so with the generosity and optimism to ultimately let the dog steal the show.

Written and directed by Solondz, and with a stunning cast that includes Ellen Burstyn, Kieran Culkin, Julie Delpy, Danny DeVito and Greta Gerwig this hilarious new comedy is a must-see.

Dogs have often had a starring role on the big screen alongside their human co-stars. To celebrate the release of Wiener-Dog on DVD and Digital, we’ve picked our top dogs that have appeared in films...

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic dogs on the big screen is Lassie. This rough collie first graced the big screen in Lassie Come Home and has been a star ever since. Did you know that Lassie is one of three dogs to have her own star on the walk of fame in Hollywood?

Uggie is one of the charismatic stars of The Artist and also appeared in Water For Elephants. See some of his highlights from The Artist below and why his performances make him one of our favourites.

Hooch turns Detective Turner’s life upside down when their paths cross in Turner & Hooch (with Turner believing Hooch is the only witness to a murder!). This French Mastiff is soon filling up the big screen and working with Turner to try and solve the case.

Toto is Dorothy’s faithful companion in The Wizard Of Oz and sticks by her s side throughout her adventures in the land of Oz. Toto also has her own ‘autobiography’ called I, Toto.

During a heartfelt cinematic journey on the big screen, Lolabelle really makes an impact in the documentary Heart Of A Dog

Marley is the loveable mischief-maker from Marley and Me and her presence on screen tugged on the heartstrings of many cinemagoers. Marley was not played by just one dog but by a total of 22 different Labradors throughout the film! See how Marley got his name with this clip from the film.

We couldn’t decide which top dog to choose from the mockumentary comedy Best In Show, so we decided to pick them all!

Frank the pug plays an alien in disguise in Men In Black. He’s the only dog on this list to have a speaking role in the film.

Puffy is the Border Terrier in There's Something About Mary and a source of comedy throughout the film. Watch her hilarious fight scene with Ben Stiller here:

A key performer in The Drop was Rocco – an adorable pit-bull puppy – who plays a pivotal role throughout.

Einstein, Doc Brown’s pet sheepdog from Back To The Future, also deserves an honourable mention.
