Strong International Pre-Sales For British Comedy FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS As Principal Photography Begins with Ensemble Cast

08 May 2018

Fred Films and Powder Keg Pictures have commenced principal photography on location in Port Isaac, Cornwall on ‘Fisherman’s Friends’, a heartwarming comedy from the writers and producers of "Finding Your Feet".

The film showcases an exciting British ensemble cast of Daniel Mays (Atonement, Dads Army), James Purefoy (Solomon Kane, Rome), David Hayman ( Finding Your Feet, Viceroy’s House ), Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake ) Sam Swainsbury (Thor: The Dark World, Mum), Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game, Sense8), Maggie Steed (Paddington 2, Florence Foster Jenkins) and Noel Clarke (Brotherhood, Star Trek).

The film is inspired by the true story of Port Isaac’s Fishermen’s Friends who went from singing in the village harbor to a deal with Island Records, a top-ten album and performing on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury.

In a twist of fate, cynical music executive Danny finds himself in a small Cornish village trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen. Attempting to overcome the fishermen’s skepticism about the music business he finds himself drawn into the community, has his integrity tested and ultimately is shown the meaning of loyalty, love and friendship.

The film is directed by Chris Foggin (Kids in Love) marking his second feature behind the camera. Foggin made his name with a trio of award-winning short films including ‘Friend Request Pending’ starring Judi Dench and Tom Hiddleston.

The film is produced by James Spring, Meg Leonard and Nick Moorcroft, the team behind hit international comedy “Finding Your Feet” and is written by Leonard and Moorcroft (Finding Your Feet) and Piers Ashworth (St Trinian’s).

Legacy Rights, the international sales company headed up by James Scott has hooked sales for multiple international territories including Latin America and Spain (Sun Distribution) , Japan (New Select), Scandinavia (Scanbox), the Middle East (Gulf Film) and Airlines (Jaguar) ahead of the film’s launch at Cannes.

James Scott of Legacy commented, “The script has struck a chord with buyers around the world who have responded to this universal tale of camaraderie. The film is a celebration of humanity and it’s a joy to be involved.”

Producers/Writers, Leonard and Moorcroft added, “As soon as we saw the news headline about ten singing fishermen signing a million pound record deal we knew this was a story that had to be told and one that audiences would want to see”.

Producer James Spring commented “Fisherman’s Friends provides a perfect follow up to the success of “Finding Your Feet” and demonstrates that there is a real appetite in today’s marketplace for uplifting and moving comedies.”

Fisherman’s Friends is a Head Gear Films and Metrol Technology presentation in association with Legacy Rights of a Fred Films and Powder Keg Production in association with Hindsight and IPG Media.
