Miramax Studios close their doors

29 January 2010

Miramax Studios has closed for business after 31 years of making some of Hollywood's greatest films.

The movie company, which became the leading distributor for independent films, was started by Harvey and Bob Weinstein in 1979.

Famed for releasing such movies like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, The English Patient and Shakespeare In Love, the studio garnered over 200 Oscar nominations. Sold to Disney in 1993, the Weinsteins left in 2005 after reported disagreements with the studio.

In an email statement, Harvey wrote, "I know the movies made on me and my brother's watch will live on.

"If there is ever an opportunity to make a deal to buy it back, we would certainly take it and there isn't much in the world that would make our 83-year-old mother happier."

Miramax has struggled in recent years to replicate its previous successes, and the move to shut it down is part of the restructuring of Disney's film portfolio following the appointment of Rich Ross as chairman. Up to 80 people have lost their jobs.
