Men In Black sequel hits in 2012 in 3D

08 May 2010

After much speculation, Columbia Pictures has officially announced that a third, 3D film featuring the secret, black-attired defenders of Earth, Men In Black 3, is a go for a 2012 release.

Returning to the helm is director Barry Sonnenfeld, and the producing team from the first two films Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are returning and Steven Spielberg is expected to return as executive producer.

Original stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are back as Agents Kay and Jay respectively, joining them is 'No Country For Old Men' star Josh Brolin, who is in final negotiations to play a younger version of Agent Kay, apparently the new film will utilise a time travel element.

Along with the returning alum, joining the team for the third film are writer Etan Cohen. He’s the guy responsible for Tropic Thunder and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Jeff Blake, is thrilled to bring it to you. He said, “We couldn’t be more excited that the original filmmaking team responsible for the first two worldwide hits is reuniting for this third installment. We love where the story is taking Agents Jay and Kay and know this new chapter will deliver a fresh fun twist for fans of the franchise while also introducing the Men in Black to a whole new generation of moviegoers.”

The first two installments took in more than $1 billion worldwide, the success of the third film rests with Etan Cohen's writing, can he deliver something fresh while honouring the originals? Let's hope the 3D is more than just a gimmick.
