Matthew Vaughn signs for X-Men: First Class

05 May 2010

Blimey… It's the U-turn of the century, but it seems that Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn has signed on to direct X-Men: First Class.

Bryan Singer, director of the initial two X-men films, is a major creative source for the story that will unravel in X-Men: First Class and will sit on the production team for the new prequel alongside Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. The First Class comic takes place at the beginning of the X-men mythos, at a time with Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr (later to become Magneto) were best pals. Also many of the most famous mutants were just teenagers. Dr. Henry McCoy for instance, the scholarly Beast, was not yet furry nor blue in color at the time, and Scott Summers (Cylops) was just beginning his training.

The comic features cover art that is predominately crisp and simple, lending that classic feel to the series. It will be interesting to see what style the live action film will take, especially because some fans might want to see outlandish eighties hairstyles.

There are no details concerning Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) who could make an appearance as the character doesn't age.

The combination of Vaughn signing his name to the film and a recent rewrite of the script by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (who had done work on the Thor script for Marvel) convinced executives that the film could actually be made in time to arrive next year – June 3, to be exact.

It is also rumoured that Vaughn's co-writer, Jane Goldman, may be coming on board too. Her husband, Jonathan Ross, has just announced on Twitter that 'My wife has just taken on a big new exciting movie. So I'll be doing the cooking for the next 10 weeks.'
