14 December 2016

Two students selected to receive a full one-year scholarship

The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF), the UK charity for people working behind the scenes in cinema, film and television, has today announced the two recipients of the 2016 CTBF Richard Attenborough Scholarship for the National Film and Television School (NFTS). Created in memory of the late Richard Attenborough, who served as a patron of both The CTBF and NFTS, the scholarship provides two students each year with a full one-year scholarship to study for an MA at the world-renowned film school.

The 2016 recipients are first-year Screenwriting MA student, Jessica Sinyard and second-year Producing MA student, Sabina Smitham. Hailing from Yorkshire, Jessica’s feature screenplays have won awards in the UK and USA, including Screen Yorkshire’s Triangle Programme and Illinois International Film Festival’s Best Screenplay prize. Jessica is passionate about storytelling and is excited about the prospect of developing her craft alongside fellow writers and filmmakers. Before the NFTS Sabina was named a “Broadcast Hotshot” by Broadcast Magazine and “One to Watch” by the Guardian Edinburgh International TV Festival. Sabina’s passion is for scripted development and working with new writers who offer an unusual perspective. At the NFTS she is developing several projects for film and TV.

D’Arcy Myers, Chief Executive of The CTBF commented “During his life and career Lord Attenborough devoted much of his time to charitable work, with the CTBF very fortunate to have counted him as a Vice-Patron and passionate advocate. The UK has some of the finest film and television schools in the world, with Beaconsfield’s National Film and Television School regularly hailed as a global example for how best to prepare students for our competitive industry. I can think of no better way to pay tribute to the irreplaceable Lord Attenborough and to continue The CTBF’s commitment to individuals behind the scenes than by supporting the next generation of screen craft professionals as they embark on this exciting stage of their journey.”

Nik Powell, Director of the National Film and Television school said “Lord Attenborough was a unique force of nature; his passion and deep humanity shined through in his films, as well as the huge contribution he made to the industry and education, especially at the NFTS and it is a fitting tribute to him that he and his support is remembered through these scholarships. Jessica and Sabina are worthy recipients and we are incredibly grateful for The CTBF’s continued support.”
