Is Avatar based on little known sci-fi novel?

31 October 2009

James Cameron has been accused of plagiarising a 1950's sci-fi novel for his new movie Avatar.

Poul Anderson's 1957 novella Call Me Joe tells the story of a paraplegic who telepathically connects with an artificial being on a harsh alien planet. As he spends more time in the artificial body he begins to prefer that life to his own.

Avatar tells pretty much the exact same basic plot, which has led to the accusations.

It's not the first time the film has been accused of plagiarism. Some critics have noted visual similarities between Avatar and CGI flop Delgo.

Indeed, Cameron was sued for plagiarism by Harlon Ellison over similarities to the plot of The Terminator and an Outer Limits episode that Ellison wrote. Ellison is now acknowledged in the film's credits.
