Ian McKellen confirms The Hobbit start date

18 March 2010

Sir Ian McKellen has let slip some details about The Lord of the Rings prequel.

The Hobbit has been hit by a series of delays, prompting speculation as to when the film will finally begin rolling. However, the British actor has revealed that work on The Hobbit will begin in June, while New Line has yet to make any official announcement about an official greenlight, the schedule or the cast.

He posted on his website, "The Hobbit - two films, start shooting in New Zealand in June. Filming will take over a year. Casting in Los Angeles, New York City and London has started. The script too proceeds. The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth."

McKellen will once again don the ropes of Gandalf the Wizard, while its expected that others from The Lord Of The Rings trilogy will return to their roles. Peter Jackson is on producing duties for the film this time, with Guillermo del Toro (who directed Pan's Labyrinth) directing.
