Guillermo del Toro to tackle Van Helsing for Universal

11 June 2010

Iconic director Guillermo del Toro is set to tackle Van Helsing, back in 2004 Stephen Sommers brought 'Van Helsing' to the big screen with Hugh Jackman as the titular monster hunter.

Abraham Van Helsing, the driven Dutch doctor who hunted the titular vampire in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, has cropped up in almost as many bloodsucking stories as the toothy legend himself.

Universal’s new stab at the character won’t be a remake but a completely new film based off a treatment by del Toro.  The new take will also be an action-horror film, when del Toro takes on that genre, you get an awesome film like 'Blade II'.

This is just one of his many, many projects. He already tackled vampires with 'Blade II' as well as his recent novel The Strain and wouldn’t mind seeing him do a new Van Helsing film. I’d doubt he would direct it, but at least we would have a strong script. Now that he’s tearfully packed his bags and departed the director’s job on The Hobbit, Guillermo del Toro’s slate is clear.

However, it might be better to include Van Helsing in Hellboy 3, he is a monster hunter after all.
