Great Hollywood Partnerships

11 March 2010

There are many film that deal with the quest to find one's soul mate. In these film, the soul mate is usually assumed to be a romantic partner. But in real life, and even in Hollywood, that's not always the case. Soul mates aren't always necessarily lovers. They can be best friends, teammates, or creative collaborators. For actors, a soul mate can be that one director that totally gets them. And for directors, a soul mate can be that rare actor who perfectly manifests their cinematic vision.

Here are the top five most brightly shining examples of modern director/actor duos that best exemplify this special relationship.

5. Judd Apatow and Paul Rudd

Apatow and Rudd first met on the set of Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy (2004) and soon after worked together as the Director/Actor duo with The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005) after the huge success of that it was inevitable that we would get even more laughs from these comedy kings with Knocked Up (2007) and Funny People (2009) Rudd says he feels "forever indebted to Apatow for the opportunities he has given him".

4. Coen Brothers and George Clooney

The first film The Coen Brothers teamed with George Clooney on was O Brother, Where Art Thou (2000) which recieved two Oscar nominations. They went onto collaborate on Intolerable Cruelty (2003) and Burn After Reading (2008). When Joel and Ethan are involved with a film, you can be sure that George Clooney isn't far behind.

3. Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe

Russel Crowe and Ridley Scott worked together first in Gladiator (2000), then the TIFF offering A Good Year (2006), they went straight from that into shooting American Gangster (2007) and Body of Lies (2008). The film we are most excited about is the remake of Robin Hood (2010) due for release later this year. With these back to back releases from this duo - what will be next in the pipeline?

2. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio

Martin Scorsese appears to have moved on from this 1970s and '80s pairing with Robert DeNiro to his modern creative muse, Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom he has made Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), and now the intriguing tribute to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, we indulge in Shutter Island (2010).

1. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp

Really, could any other pair have topped this list? From Edward Scissorhands (1990) to Ed Wood (1994) to Corpse Bride (2005) to Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (2007), it often feels like Burton and Depp live in their own weird little world, which they occasionally invite us to visit. Depp always looks the most at home in Burton's films, because their imaginations go to the same strange places, most recently they share their childhood visions of Alice in Wonderland (2010).
