FDA And FEREF Join Forces To Present THE UK FILM POP-UP EVENT to Celebrate Iconic Film Posters from the Last 50 Years

16 July 2018

Free celebration of film for fans and all the family in Soho, 24–26 July

Dedicated area, Feref: Unseen, celebrates some of the most iconic film poster art from the last 50 years

Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) today unveils details of its latest interactive event for families, The UK Film Pop-up Event.

Taking place at the Gallery at 15 Bateman Street, Soho, the event offers a varied selection of film-themed experiences and activities for children of all ages, just as the six-week school holidays begin. The event is free of charge to visit for three days, 24–26 July.

Visitors can try a Virtual Reality experience, take their photo in ‘Hollywood’ and follow a trail of contemporary film posters and images. For eager film fans there’s a fiendish quiz and a chance to explore who does what on a film set via panels demystifying job titles.

For younger children, there are creative activity stations and a soft play area. FDA’s unique LEGO® model cinema, built from 25,000 bricks on the occasion of FDA’s centenary in 2015, will also be back on public display.

A dedicated area of the gallery will host Feref: Unseen, a special experience curated by Feref, the independent film marketing agency that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. This exhibition presents an extraordinary collection of film and entertainment artwork from the archive of Feref in Soho.

The treasure trove was only recently discovered in a storage facility that had been left untouched since the early 1990s. The selected works, spanning 50 years of UK and international film advertising, are on display for the first time to the public.

Featuring the work of some of the world’s best-known poster artists, the exhibits range from original concept drawings and rarely seen printer’s proofs to beautifully hand-illustrated original posters. In addition, the inclusion of the artist’s sketches and comments reveal the way they were briefed in greater detail and in advance of creating the final poster.

Lord Puttnam of Queensgate CBE, FDA President, said “This is a wonderfully vivid showcase of some of the creative skills required both to make movies and release them to audiences. I sincerely hope the new array of images and activities will delight and inspire visitors of every age, whether in person or online. It’s a timely reminder, especially during a summer of very high-profile sports events, that the cinema experience continues to offer a vast range of brilliant entertainment.”

Graham Hawkey-Smith, Feref CEO, said “It’s a privilege for Feref to share this incredibly valuable archive as part of FDA’s event. We can’t share all of the thousands of films that Feref has marketed in the last 50 years, but visitors will get to see some of the most iconic, previously unseen, work for Star Wars, James Bond and many other films.”

Visitor information: The UK Film Pop-Up Event is open to the public at the Gallery, 15 Bateman Street, London W1D 3AQ, on Tuesday 24 July (2pm–5pm), Wednesday 25 July (10am–4pm) and Thursday 26 July (10am–1pm). Admission is free.
