DEREK JACOBI FILM IS SHORTLISTED FOR AN OSCAR
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that British film SIDNEY TURTLEBAUM has been shortlisted for an Academy Award in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Seventy-one pictures originally qualified in this category with 10 selected for the shortlist. Nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards® will be held on Feb 2. The awards ceremony takes place on March 7.
In addition to being nominated for BEST BRITISH SHORT at the British Independent Film Awards which took place on December 6, the film also recently won BEST SHORT FILM at the LA Shortsfest, BEST SHORT FILM at the Method Film Festival in LA and was the BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival’s official entry to the IRIS PRIZE 2009.
Acclaimed BAFTA, EMMY and TONY award-winning actor, Derek Jacobi (LOVE IS THE DEVIL, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, I, CLAUDIUS) stars as Sidney Turtlebaum, a smooth-talking gay man in the twilight of his life, who steals from grieving strangers at funerals, where he passes himself off as distant relative.When Sidney meets handsome young escort Gabriel, played by rising star Rupert Evans (HELLBOY), he decides to introduce his strange world to him, with bitter-sweet consequences.
Set in the heart of London’s Jewish community in Golders Green, this award- winning short film is directed by BAFTA nominated director, Tristram Shapeero, (GREEN WING, PEEP SHOW ), written by BAFTA nominated writer Raphael Smith and produced by Daniel Jewel through his production company Third Man Films.
SIDNEY TURTLEBAUM is currently being developed into a full-length feature film by Portobello Pictures and Third Man Films. Derek Jacobi is attached to star.
