Cutting-Edge Cinema Format ‘4DX with ScreenX’ Continues to Make its Mark with Newly Opened Auditorium in Tokyo, Japan

20 September 2019

4DX with ScreenX, the latest innovation in cinema technology has received an overwhelmingly positive response from moviegoers around the world, after screening 12 of the biggest films of the year so far, including Captain Marvel, Shazam! and Spider Man: Far From Home.

Attendance numbers in China are sky-high, and seat occupancy rate is more than doubled from the traditional 2D format. In addition, 4DX with ScreenX is high in demand, so illegal fake tickets are being produced in South Korea. Following this rise in popularity, thirteen new auditoriums have been opened in South Korea, China, France and Japan so far this year.

The latest to open, the Grand Cinema Sunshine auditorium located in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, has been received with enthusiasm from audiences since it opened on 19th July. The cinema had to extend the screening dates of Spider-Man: Far From Home due to high demand from cinemagoers to see the MCU blockbuster in 4DX with ScreenX. It continued to sell out in the prime-time slots and has recorded an attendance level of up to 99% per day since the opening.

“We had a strong desire to have Japanese customers experience the world's best technology at Grand Cinema Sunshine. Most of all, 4DX with ScreenX is one of the main features of Grand Cinema Sunshine, and it provides moviegoers with an innovative and exciting cinema experience.” said Shinichi Sasaki, President of Cinema Sunshine.

4DX with ScreenX is a blend of two of the most advanced theatre technologies on the market today: the motion seating and environmental effects of 4DX that synchronize with the action on-screen and the ScreenX format, which projects onto the main screen and the theatre walls, bringing moviegoers beyond the frame of the movie screen. It makes for a unique and exciting cinema experience, now becoming available to audiences around the world.

The 4DX with ScreenX technology first debuted at CGV Yongsan in South Korea in 2017 to a sellout crowd, and since then it has opened in France (July, 2018), China (October, 2018) and Japan (July, 2019). As of August 2019, 4DX with ScreenX has been installed in 17 screens around the world, including nine in China, five in South Korea, two in France and Japan's first 4DX with ScreenX cinema in Tokyo.

4DX with ScreenX was recognized with Silver at the highly esteemed Edison Awards, in the Media and Visual Communications-Entertainment category in 2018 and its parent company CJ 4DPLEX was named Most Innovative Company 2019 in Live Events by Fast Company.
