Cameron’s blast at Avatar critics

22 January 2010

James Cameron's has furiously dismissed suggestions that Avatar is anti-military.

Right-wing critics have slammed the movie, accusing Cameron's sci-fi epic as an affront to the American military. Avatar sees a group of Marines attempting to destroy an alien species in a bid to mine their natural resources.

However, Cameron has hit back at the claims, saying, "The anti-military thing is kind of tough for me because my younger brother Dave was a marine for six years, fought (in) Desert Storm and he's worked for me for years.

"I've got nothing but respect for these guys and I'm a firm believer in a strong defence. My perspective is that I made my main character a marine and I viewed him with heroism and courage and intelligence and all the characteristics I thought would honour them (marines) and I think people are thinking about it too simplistically."
