Being Evermoist’s Serenity: A Conversation with Rock Star Andy Allo for the Home Entertainment Release of Trish Sie’s Pitch Perfect 3
Now graduated from college and out in the real world where it takes more than a cappella to get by, the Bellas return in Pitch Perfect 3, the next chapter in the beloved series that has taken in more than $400 million at the global box office.
After the highs of winning the World Championships, the Bellas find themselves split apart and discovering there aren’t job prospects for making music with your mouth. But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas USO tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time.
Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Hana Mae Lee, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Chrissie Fit, Kelley Jakle, Shelley Regner, Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins all return and are joined by additions including John Lithgow and Ruby Rose. Pitch Perfect 3 is again produced by Paul Brooks of Gold Circle Entertainment and Max Handelman & Elizabeth Banks of Brownstone Productions, and is directed by Trish Sie (Step Up All In).
Andy Allo, along with being known for her appearances in the comedy-drama series “The Game” and the talk show “Attack of the Show!,” is known for being an accomplished musician. In addition to releasing her album Superconductor, produced by Prince, her music has appeared in the critically acclaimed film Dear White People and hit television show “New Girl.” She is also known for her role as a singer and guitarist in Prince's band.
In our interview, Andy tells Jenny about joining the Pitch Perfect series, working with Trish Sie and Ruby Rose and what she has coming up...
How did it feel for you to join such a popular film series?
Oh my gosh, it was so exciting I couldn’t believe it. I watched Pitch Perfect 1 and 2 and was a huge fan of the films and always was like “aww man I would love to be in this film” it was just the perfect combination of the two things that I love which is music and acting and so when the opportunity came up and for me to be in the film I jumped at it, I was like “Yes! Where do I need to be? What time? I’ll drive myself” (laughs)
laughs) That’s amazing. What was it like working with Trish Sie and all of the cast?
Oh it was so great, I mean Trish really created just a collaborative, exciting environment where you just played, you know, there would be times where she would say “okay I’m not really crazy about how this is going” or “how this line is coming out, why don’t you guys just have some fun and see what happens”, so there was just this open space where you could be creative and be in the moment and I really loved that because there have been a lot of jokes that just came out us just playing.
It’s funny you brought up collaborative because in all of the films, particularly this one, there’s a real sense of camaraderie between everyone on screen, was that apparent on set between filming?
Yes definitely. There’s a moment we where shooting, Ruby (Rose) and I, our characters are kind of bickering, riffing and making jokes about each other in character and the crew is like holding in their laughter and afterwards when we finished shooting we where all sitting together and Anna (Kendrick) kind of said to me “you know when you said this line that was really good, that was so funny” and I hadn’t really spoken with her or we just hadn’t had time to all hang out yet because this was right at the beginning of shooting, so for her to kind of say this and this is someone who I’ve watched work and am a huge fan of as well and her being the kind of forefront of this film it was just great to have that, like where you’re cool and you’re like part of the family it’s just those little things that make you feel like everyone is rooting for you to succeed.
Aww that’s lovely. So spend a lot of time with Ruby Rose, what was she like to work with?
She’s crazy (laughs)
(laughs) That’s what you want to hear! (laughs)
(laughs) In the best way possible though. You know, she’s so fun, it was really cool because we kind of talked about coming up in the industry and us loving music and I didn’t know she was an artist as well and she sings, and so it was really cool for us to bond over that and she also had a sense of humour, though she was giving me a lot of crap because, you know, I’m a bit of a hoarder and I was hoarding snacks from the crafting because I like snacks, I like to have my snacks there’s nothing wrong with that (laughs)
Not at all, I’m a snack eater I’m not going to lie (laughs)
Right (laughs) but yeah she would make a lot of fun of me every time she would see me at the crafting table she would be like “Oh here we go again. You want to save some for us? Other people?” (laughs)
I always find you make the best of friends that also enjoy standing at a craft table but…..
Yes exactly (laughs)
You kind of answered this a bit, but besides that, was there any particular moment that stood out to you for the rest of your life that you’re going to remember?
Oh wow. I would say…..I mean there’s a lot. I’d say being our big scene where we’re on stage and performing our song that was really epic and seeing, the cool thing was the people in the audience, some where extras but some where actual military and veterans and their families and they where just so excited to be a part of it and by the end of us shooting that they knew all the words and, they where singing with us, it felt like a real concert and they where just down to shoot it, listen to the songs over and over but there was never any feeling of “oh here we go again” it was just everyone was so excited and I loved how the film and Universal kind of incorporated that and created this moment that they really don’t get to have and so that was really cool.
Within your own career, are films with a musical edge to them something that you look for when choosing your roles?
Not necessarily. You know I’ve kind of jumped into this other side of artistry being an actor, I love being challenged by different roles this movie just happened to be, like I said, that perfect combination of my two loves though I would love to keep doing that and do other projects that showcase that side of my creativity, but I’m so down for where this ride takes me.
