Avatar continues to enjoy box office success
22 December 2009
James Cameron's Avatar seems to be benefiting from box office word of mouth.
The sci-fi epic has taken over £150 million worldwide since its release last weekend - and had the fifth best opening outside the US. Despite a huge blizzard that struck the East Coast, Avatar still took £45 million in America. And impressively there was only a three per cent drop from Saturday's box office receipts to Sunday. Usually, the drop is much higher.
Fox president of domestic distribution Bruce Snyder beamed, "I don't ever remember seeing this before."
Not that Cameron will be too surprised. Before the film was released, he predicted that word of mouth will prevail and that Avatar will enjoy repeat business.
