Adam McKays says Chistina Applegate is likely to return for Anchorman 2

While comedy great Judd Apatow believes that the hotly anticipated sequel to 2004 hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy will not ruin the original film's legacy, word is that Samantha Who? babe Christina Applegate will likely return.

Apatow tells The Huffington Post "We're talking about shooting that next year, and Will [Ferrell] and Adam [McKay] are off writing. We always knew we wanted to do a sequel, and the great thing about Anchorman is that you could do a sequel when they're any age.

I've never been somebody who thinks that you should worry about the second one ruining the reputation of the first one, I still like Caddyshack. I don't mind that Caddyshack 2 wasn't as good as Caddyshack 1. It doesn't ruin Caddyshack for me. But I'm glad they made Godfather 2 and Back to the Future Part II and Part III.

I always say go for it. All of these actors and writers on Anchorman have such an incredible chemistry, it would be a waste for them not to work together again. I'm glad they are trying.
Nobody in the world is funnier than Will and Adam, so I'm excited to see what they write."

As for Applegate, director Adam McKay tells The Hollywood Reporter "We have an idea for her that we think is pretty cool, so tentatively right now she's in. But obviously we kind of have to let it be what it's gonna be. We don't want to handcuff ourselves, but we love Applegate, so any chance to work with her is always fun."

The storyline for the sequel was previously hinted to involve a child custody battle between Will Ferrell's Ron Burgundy and Applegate's Corningstone, and while that's still a possibility, the director reveals "I'll tell you we're staying roughly period, I would just say it's the next stage in the development of American media and news. The fun of these characters is they confront change very poorly. So they've got some more change coming their way. I can say that pretty safely."

Anchorman 2 is set to begin filming next February and is tentatively set to arrive on the big screen in 2014.
