Journeying to the Land of Tomorrow: A Conversation with Thomas Robinson

Tomorrowland: A World Beyond

Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as “Tomorrowland.”

The Fan Carpet’s Marc Jason Ali had the pleasure of speaking with Thomas Robinson, who plays the young inventor Frank Walker, he tells us how he got involved, working with Raffey Cassidy and his experience with the jetpack…

How did you first get involved in Tomorrowland?

I think originally my brother was auditioning for a part, and then they decided to go younger so they called me in for an audition. I think that’s how it started.

You have a lot of scenes with Raffey’s Athena; can you talk about that experience and what the relationship was like on set?

Well that was, those where fun days of filming because a lot of it I was just filming on my own, just with the stunt crew and the director, so those scenes with Raffey where really really fun, she’s just such a nice friendly person, she kind of brings this infectious happiness to the set and its really cool. We never really got time to hang out, out of, well not when we’re working, but it was just a really fun set dynamic and it made the filming much, go much faster.

You played the young George Clooney, whilst you don’t have any scenes with him can you talk about what it was like to work with him and did he give you any advice?

I actually never really got the chance to work with him, I think I met him once I think on like the second to last day of filming and just said ‘hi’ but when I met him he was just a really nice guy.

The jetpack scene is pretty spectacular where you’re flying around, how was that to shoot and was it one of your favourites?

That was absolutely amazing to shoot, they actually had this entire wire set up from like cranes and stuff or in the studio and it was really cool we were actually 30ft above the ground, actually flying with this prop jetpack on my back it was just such an amazing experience and I think that was definitely the highlight of the filming.

Aside from that do you have any other memorable moments from set?

Well there was this one day in the cornfield part, we were, I think we went there a week early to set everything up and after filming one day all the crew we went to this river like right off and we went swimming and it was really cool just bonding with everybody on set.

Tomorrowland is science fiction fantasy, are there any genres that you haven’t done that you would like to?

Well I’ve never done like a horror movie which might be kind of fun actually, I don’t know I think a horror movie is definitely on my list as that’d be kind of fun to film and I really like doing the science fiction thing with Tomorrowland has been really fun and I might look into more of that kind of stuff.

Who inspires you as a young actor?

That is a tough question (laughs) I really don’t know, there’s not like on specific person it’s just seeing other kids who have furthered their acting career in the movies is kind of inspiring seeing that I can get better at some point possibly.

Obviously being part of the Disney family has got to be pretty spectacular…

Yeah it’s amazing because everybody associated with the movie and everything was so nice and it’s just really cool to be part of this bigger thing.

What is next for you?

Nothing in terms of acting so far, I’m mostly just focusing on school, homework and all kinds of that stuff, just regular life.

So is acting something you want to go into more once you’ve finished your studies and everything?

Yes definitely, it’s just such a fun creative thing that, I don’t necessarily know if I want it to be my career, but I definitely want to keep going with this it’s a really amazing experience.

What was it like working with Brad Bird, he’s kind of a legend, he’s one of my favourites from The Incredibles and Ratatouille and Mission Impossible, he’s just great. How was he to work with?

It was a totally different experience from anything I’ve ever done before, it was really cool, because he has such vivid image in his head that he really can like show you on how he wants everything to be and it’s just a really creative fun, I guess, feel on set when he’s around.

In terms of your career, you’re quite young, how’d you first get started in acting? Was there a defining moment for you to pursue it?

Not really, I never had a moment where I’m like “I want to be an actor, this is what I want to do” it sort of just happened, we moved to LA for a job interview my dad had and it sort of just started as a little hobby while we were here and I guess turned into this and it’s really cool.
