Cinema audiences to be frisked by security

09 November 2009

Film fans wanting to see British gang film 1 Day will have to be frisked by security guards.

Showcase cinema chain have made the unprecedented move for the film, which tells the story of a day in the life of two warring British inner city gangs. They are demanding the film's distributor covers the costs of the security measure.

It's not the first time the film, which is in cinemas now, has been hit by controversy. 1 Day won't be showed in most West Midlands cinemas after a community police officer warned two cinemas in Birmingham, where the film is set, not to screen the movie as it could incite violence from gangs. Other cinema chains the area have followed suit after the police request.

Although West Midlands police claim the officer made the request on his own behalf, 1 Day director, Penny Woolcock, has complained to the film minister Sion Simon about "police censorship".
