The flexible, all?purpose leading man was born in Santa Monica, California, and educated at St. Peter’s College and the University of California before serving as a sergeant in Vietnam, where he was decorated. Gunton made his New York debut Off Broadway in 1971 and was on Broadway six years later when a Brooklyn production of Happy End transferred to Manhattan. His most successful performances have been in hit musicals: the Argentine dictator Juan Peron in Evita (1979), the phony King in Big River (1985), and the psychotic barber Sweeney Todd (1989).
