American actress, she was signed to a contract by MGM Studios in 1941 and appeared in supporting roles until she drew attention with her performance in The Killers (1946). She became one of Hollywood’s leading actresses, admired for her beauty, and highly regarded for her acting ability. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in Mogambo (1953). She appeared in several popular films during the 1950s, and received BAFTA Award nominations for her performances in Bhowani Junction (1956), On the Beach (1959) and The Night of the Iguana (1964).

Gardner’s acting career began to lose momentum after this, and although she continued to work in film and television, her appearances were infrequent until her retirement in 1982. Gardner died in her London home in 1990, from pneumonia, following several years of declining health. She is listed as one of the American Film Institute’s greatest stars of all time.
